Blue Cheer is credited by most sources as the pioneers of Heavy Metal rock.  The San Francisco band took their cover of "Summertime Blues" to #14 in the U.S. and #3 in Canada in 1968 and influenced hundreds of rock bands the world over.  The band reunited several times and toured through 2009.
