"Paperback Writer" by The Beatles hit #1 on the Hot 100 on June 25, 1966... exactly 49 years ago today. The song was unique in many aspects, but to me it's a historical Beatle tune because John Lennon was insisting to producer George Martin that the band develop a much stronger bass line on their records. This caused Paul to switch from the beloved violin shaped Hofner bass guitar to a much punchier Rickenbacker. From this recording on. Beatle tunes had a much stronger bass line. A great song, a #1, and yet mostly forgotten today.
