After the Monkees TV show ended in 1968, Mike Nesmith formed the First National Band and headed to the recording studio. In 1970, the song "Joanne" climbed to #21 on the Hot 100. Although not a monster hit, the song and the First National Band are credited with being a pioneer for country rock. After the band recorded three albums, it disbanded, going down in rock history as a one-hit wonder and forgotten oldie.
