In 1966 an iconic American singer got his start when the song "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" went all the way to #8 on the Hot 100, establishing B.J. Thomas and the Triumphs as a new force in the industry. Then nothing. It wasn't until two years later, after Thomas got rid of the Triumphs and went solo, that he started his long string of hits. But "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" was a genuine smash hit, taken from the Hank Williams song it sold over a million copies. Today it's mostly forgotten.
