WAR!!

They've been around a long time, but San Francisco's great band War, got their start when they teamed up with Eric Burdon in 1970. Their first hit was "Spill The Wine" which went all the way to #3 on the hot 100 that year.  To me, War is extremely interesting... their music combined rock, R & B, reggae, jazz and latin.  They also transcended racial and cultural barriers with a multi-ethnic lineup. But this song is where they started, and it's largely forgotten today.
