Happy Birthday Eric!

Eric Clapton is 70 today, born March 30, 1945.  If you skip over the Beatles and Stones, you'll find more of his records and CD's in my music library than any other guitarist.  From the Yardbirds, to John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers, to Cream, to Derek & the Dominoes, to his solo work, his guitar playing is legendary.  And he's still going strong today!

Deep Purple 2015

Back in the day, the band that first and foremost made me love hard rock was Deep Purple.  These guys are still amazing, and still touring!  Here's their tour dates for this summer

#1 in 1968

"This Guy's in Love With You" was a Herb Alpert single written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. It had been written years before and forgotten, but offered to Herb Alpert by Bacharach because Herb was looking for dusty treasures exactly like this song.  It went to #1 on the Hot 100 and stayed there for four weeks.  It's truly a beautiful song, but now mostly forgotten.

La Crosse Kiwanis Club

Today was Kiwanis Day on the Eagle. I had the pleasure of having these gentlemen, Tim Carlson (L) and Dave Curtis (R) on the air with me from 6 - 9AM.  If you're not familiar with the Kiwanians and the great work they do for the youth in our community, check out their website!!

Have you ever seen one on the road?

A lot of companies have gone the extra mile with their big-rig paint jobs.  I've seen a couple of similar paint jobs on the highway the last couple of years... have you?

Sopwith Camel

To an older generation, a Sopwith Camel was a British bi-plane from World War I.  To the hippies of San Francisco in the '60's, they were a psychedelic rock band that was the 2nd Frisco band to sign with a major record label (after Jefferson Airplane), and the very first Frisco band with a top 40 hit.  Their 1967 "Hello Hello" catapulted the band to short-lived fame, and strangely sounded nothing like the rest of the band's music and was more reminiscent of vaudeville than flower power. The song is nearly forgotten today as is the band.

WAR!!

They've been around a long time, but San Francisco's great band War, got their start when they teamed up with Eric Burdon in 1970. Their first hit was "Spill The Wine" which went all the way to #3 on the hot 100 that year.  To me, War is extremely interesting... their music combined rock, R & B, reggae, jazz and latin.  They also transcended racial and cultural barriers with a multi-ethnic lineup. But this song is where they started, and it's largely forgotten today.

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Yes, it's the day for the "wearin' of the green"... but, are you Irish??  When I was a little guy, my Grandma (half Irish) used to say that if you're Irish and you don't wear green on St. Patty's Day, you get pinched.  And, if you're not Irish and you wear green, you also get pinched.  Does anyone else remember that practice?

Anyone remember?

I remember June 30, 1977 very well.  Heart and the Little River Band performed that night at the old Mary Sawyer Auditorium.  I always enjoyed Heart's music and concerts.  I thought sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson were the female equivalent of Page and Plant.  Nancy was extremely good on guitar, very under-rated, and easy to look at too!  Plus, she had a great collection of guitars!  Here's to the good old days, and Heart!!

Number 6 on 4/4/64?

Have you ever wondered what song was number six on the Hot 100 on April 4, 1964... the day the Beatles held the top five spots on the chart?  It was today's forgotten oldie.... "Suspicion" by Terry Stafford.  The song eventually peaked at #3, and except for the Beatles, would easily have been #1.  What a great song, sadly forgotten today.

Grammy Award Winner!!

And yet, mostly forgotten today.  The Beatles song "Michelle" was one of three grammy winners for the Fab-Four on March 11, 1967.  Listed by BMI as one of the 50 most recorded songs in the world, the song was actually a bigger hit around the world than here in the USA, but it still dominated the airwaves here in '66.  Today, it's rarely played anywhere....

Another Saturday Night

In 1963, Sam Cooke took the song "Another Saturday Night" to #10 on the Hot 100, but a cover version by Cat Stevens in 1974 was a bigger hit, reaching #6 in the USA and #1 in Canada.  This is such a great song I've always wondered why it slipped into the Forgotten Oldie category!

Donovan

Back in the 60's, the British answer to Bob Dylan was Donovan Leitch, professionally known as simply Donovan.  After many hits in the mid 60's, his hippy image caused his downfall and his last couple of singles didn't fare well.  One of his last top 40 hits was "To Susan on the West Coast Waiting". It's a typical anti-war song, a typical Donovan song, mostly forgotten today.
