Today's Forgotten Oldie...

Today one of my all-time favorite songs... "Pushin' Too Hard" by the Seeds.  The song exploded into the top 40 in February of 1968 and stayed there 11 weeks.  The song is credited with pioneering punk-rock, although I prefer to call it the first garage-band masterpiece.  Selected by the Rock &  Roll Hall of Fame as one of the 500 songs that shaped rock and roll, it's a great song deserving air-play!

Today's Forgotten Oldie...

Fancy was a pop group comprised of session musicians, with a penthouse pet singing lead. In 1974 they had a surprise top ten hit with their cover of the Troggs' classic Wild Thing. Helen Court handles the vocals and sounds like she's having a private party.  But listeners loved it, and all summer long, we heard this unique record on the radio!

So strange...

Last weekend was one of those premium movie channel previews.  I managed to DVR a few movies to watch when we can.  One of the movies was "The Three Stooges". As expected, the movie was pretty awful.  The stooges were however played by actors that sounded just like the original Larry, Moe and Curly.  Yes, I said sounded like, because they didn't look like them.  Then right toward the end of the flick, I said to myself "that's Kate Upton".  She played a nun, life-guarding at a swimming pool, in a sexy swimsuit. And amazingly, I recognized her (I guess once you're on a SI swimsuit cover you're locked in my brain forever).  Anyway, I think the whole concept is totally bizarre and strange... don't you?!?!

Today's Forgotten Oldie...

Buffalo Springfield was one of the most talented bands of the 60's.  Featuring Neil Young, Steven Stills, Richie Furay and Jim Messina, Buffalo Springfield members have appeared on literally hundreds of records and influenced rock and roll greatly.  Their big single, For What It;s Worth, was their only top ten hit... but another song, Bluebird, became the band's signature song.  Released as a single in 1967, Bluebird climbed to #58 on the hot 100... and then stopped. But the song was performed by Buffalo Springfield on many TV appearances, as well as becoming their swan song at their final concert in May of 1968.  It's a tremendous song, my favorite Buffalo Springfield song... and today's Forgotten Oldie!

Rules of camping...

I posted these last year in June, and just in case you missed them OR you've just started camping... here are my Unofficial Rules of Camping!!  Tadaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

My list is a work in progress, I may add to it from time to time. 
1. There will be many sunny days that the weatherman said would rain.
2. Meals will never be what was planned, or when.
3. There is always one more beer in the bottom of the cooler.
4. You will always have unexpected guests.
5. Nobody goes inside when it rains, so take care of your awning.
6. Always walk carefully. You fall down just once but you hear about it forever.
7. Building a fire is easy if you know how.
8. A mosquito bite is better than a frisbee in the shin.
9. Tents are a ridiculous idea invented by sadists.
10. Lawn chairs will collapse, it's a matter of time.
11. Everything tastes good reheated over a fire at 1:00 AM.

Today's Forgotten Oldie...

Blue Cheer was a San Francisco rock band that epitomized the psychedelic music of the 60's.  Often referred to as the first heavy metal band, Blue Cheer had a top twenty hit in 1968 with their cover of "Summertime Blues". A power trio that patterned themselves after the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Blue Cheer literally blew people away with their driving, soaring, powerful blend of rock, blues and an indescribable edge.  I saw them live back then, they blew me away.  Excellent band, excellent song, and largely forgotten.

This just in!!  Photos discovered recently have proven conclusively that John Wayne once auditioned for the part of the Sesame Street Big Bird!!  This never seen photo shows the Duke getting tips from veteran actors Randolph Scott and Marlene Dietrich just before the audition. (with apologies to my hero John Wayne, I just couldn't resist when I saw this shot from "The Spoilers").
