Today's Forgotten Oldie...

1964's "Don't Throw Your Love Away" was the Searchers follow-up single to their smash hit "Needled and Pins".  Realistically, there were a lot of British songs that were climbing the charts simply because they were English groups and the Beatles had created a monster when they appeared on Ed Sullivan.  But, the Searchers were a notch above the norm, and this top twenty hit was a bonafide goody... that since has disappeared from the airwaves.

Today's Forgotten Oldie...

Since it's Beatle week and the 50th anniversary of the Fab Four's 1st appearance on Ed Sullivan is this Sunday, here's another Beatle forgotten oldie.  "Matchbox" was a Carl Perkins song and the Beatles were huge Perkins fans.  They started doing the song on stage in Hamburg in 1961, performed it on their BBC radio show, and finally released it as a single in 1964. It climbed to #17 on the hot 100, rather astonishing for a rockabilly song from the 20's!  Ringo handles the vocals, and the song is a classic!

Today's Forgotten Oldie...

In honor of "Beatles Week" and this Sunday's 50th anniversary of the Fab Four's 1st appearance on Ed Sullivan, today's forgotten oldie is a Beatle tune.  "Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)" was never released as a single, but from the time Rubber Soul was released in 1965 the song got a lot of radio play.  In those days, every song of every Beatle album was played on the radio, a phenomenon never seen before or since. Historically, it was the first Beatle song to feature George on Sitar, was ranked #83 of Rolling Stones 500 greatest rock songs, and has been covered by dozens of artists from Waylon Jennings to Count Basie.  A great song.... remember?
