UFO's!!!

I read that a lot of visitors to Seattle report UFO's on foggy mornings.  That is hilarious!  But I have to admit, the space needle definitely has the look...

A Well Parodied Man...

The Kinks went to #13 in 1965 with "A Well Respected Man". The song was Ray Davies' jab at long established class distinctions in Great Britain, with funny references to typical upper class behavior... as Ray saw it.  It's still a great song today, perhaps even funnier now than 49 years ago.
Watch the Kinks do the song Live here...

Lovin' Nashville!

In 1966 the Lovin' Spoonful was riding high on the charts regularly.  Their third album "Hums" produced three top ten hits.  One of these was lead singer John Sebastian's tributes to the musicians and music in Nashville.  "Nashville Cats" went to #8 on Billboard's Hot 100.  The band thought it would cross into the country chart but it never did.  It's a nice little song that has probably become a forgotten oldie because it doesn't really fit any music genre...

I have this tree...

And my tree is growing over my wall... and I don't want to trim it... what can I do?  How about painting the wall?  Doesn't that tree look better now?

Recycle!

Halloween is just around the corner. To save a few dollars, recycle last year's pumpkin... hopefully you saved it in a dry place so it still looks good.  Hey, it's pretty scary now!!

I Think I Forgot You...

Can it be?  Yet another song that hit #1 that has slipped into the Forgotten Oldie category?  Yup!  The Partridge Family released "I Think I Love You' to coincide with their new TV show in 1970, and the song exploded to number one in the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.  Sung by show stars David Cassidy and Shirley Jones, the song has almost disappeared from the airwaves.

The Music Machine...

The 60's spawned a lot of bands that tried to garner attention by being different... The Music Machine pulled it off with success, but it didn't last long.  This LA based garage rock band performed with dyed black hair, black clothing, and each member wearing a black glove on one hand.  With a sound filled with fuzz-box guitars and Farfisa organ, their song "Talk Talk" was a top 20 hit in 1966.  The band failed to hit again, and broke up not long after.   Their first album is very solid (pictured below) and Talk Talk is a decent song, but largely forgotten today.

Potholes...

So what's wrong with potholes? If you ask me, they provide us with recreation, a chance for some fish in the freezer, and an option to wasting bath water!  They're fun!

Happy Monday....

Let's start the week with a goofy picture that needs a caption.  I can't think of anything for this one!

Did it touch you?

The Association is a seven man (sometimes six-man) band from California that scored several monster hits in the late 60's.  A favorite with the ladies, the band's last top-ten hit was "Everything That Touches You" in late 1968.  The group is still active on the "Happy Together" tours, and still performs this song live... but it's rare to hear it on the radio, another forgotten oldie.

Her name was Joanne!

After Mike Nesmith left the Monkees in 1970, he formed the First National Band, and recorded an album... "Magnetic South".  He released a couple of singles from the album, but "Joanne" was the only one to chart.  A top 40 hit in the U.S. the song reached number 4 in Canada and #1 in a couple of other countries.  I like the song, it's kind of country, and very different... and a true forgotten oldie.

Oooooops....

Yesterday's photo of the original SNL cast is wrong!!  I forgot about Chevy Chase.  Bill Murray joined in 1977 after the show's second season.  My apologies!  Here's the original cast (L to R back row - Dan Aykroyd, Jane Curtin, Laraine Newman, Chevy Chase, Garrett Morris, front row - John Belushi, Gilda Radner).

Mirror girl...

One of those great photos that has to be shared.  This young lady knows how to get the most out of a mirror!!

The Best!!!

I saw this online over the weekend and had to save it.... a picture of the original SNL cast.  Was there ever a more talented group brought together for anything on TV?  I don't think so!!

Original or cover version?

In 1970, the group Rare Earth scored a #7 smash hit with "(I Know) I'm Losing You".  Just three years earlier, the Temptations had reached #8 on the same Hot 100 with the same song.  The song was also covered by Rod Stewart and Faces, the Jackson 5, and several others.  Personally, I much prefer the Rare Earth version, although each is very good... the sad part is that the Rare Earth version has become a forgotten oldie.

When I Was Young...

The Animals had an international hit in 1967 with "When I Was Young".  The song, although written by the band, has lyrics that are all about Eric Burdon. The song covers his father, his youth, and finally his disillusionment with society.  It's still a great song, and deserves better than being a forgotten oldie.

Back to work!

So how was your long weekend?  I had a great, huge, super, fun weekend... my band played at Goose Island on Saturday night and it was a blast!  It was our sixth year in a row playing at Goose in August!
