What??

Most people use a salt lick to lure the big bucks in... I guess it's a lot easier than that.  Just put a big doggy-bed on your deck and wait for a big buck!

Paperback Writer

"Paperback Writer" by The Beatles hit #1 on the Hot 100 on June 25, 1966... exactly 49 years ago today.  The song was unique in many aspects, but to me it's a historical Beatle tune because John Lennon was insisting to producer George Martin that the band develop a much stronger bass line on their records.  This caused Paul to switch from the beloved violin shaped Hofner bass guitar to a much punchier Rickenbacker.  From this recording on. Beatle tunes had a much stronger bass line.  A great song, a #1, and yet mostly forgotten today.

Smith

This song reminds me of summer. "Baby It's You" from American rockers Smith, was a top 5 smash in 1969, achieving a Gold Record and outselling both the Shirelles and Beatles versions of the song. To me this is far-and-away the best version of the song, but today mostly forgotten.

Happy Birthday Paul

Today is Paul McCartney's 73rd birthday. There's absolutely no disputing the man's amazing number of contributions to rock music.  But along with everything else, Sir Paul has the most interesting forgotten oldie ever.  In 1965, the Beatles released the song "Yesterday".  Essentially just a Paul song, with Paul on acoustic guitar with a string quartet, it roared to number one everywhere.  The song's creds are amazing... over 2,200 recorded covers, voted best song of the 20th century by the BBC, and the #1 pop song ever by MTV and Rolling Stone magazine.  BMI asserts it's been played over seven million times in the 20th century alone.  All that, and yet today we never hear it played.  Very strange.

Well Respected Men...

Obviously we mean the British band The Kinks.  June 17, 1965 - 50 years ago today the Kinks arrived in the USA for their first American tour.  For mysterious reasons, shortly after the tour, the Kinks were banned from touring the U.S. for four years, perhaps due to their wild antics on stage and constant fighting. Regardless, they were a major force of the British Invasion.  In honor of their anniversary, here's a top twenty song from the same year, "A Well Respected Man", a song that's mostly forgotten today.

See see rider...

The song "See See Rider" was first made popular by a blues singer named Ma Rainey in 1925.  A traditional 12-bar blues song, it has since been performed and recorded by dozens of artists.  In 1966, the Animals took it to #10 on the Hot 100.  I remember a lot of the local bands doing the song back in the 60's, but today it's just another mostly forgotten oldie.

Janis Joins Big Brother...

June 10th, 1966 was a big day in the history of rock and roll... it was the day that Janis Joplin joined Big Brother and the Holding Company for their first show in San Francisco.  In honor of the occasion, today's forgotten oldie features Janis and Big Brother.... and a song that almost reached the top 40, "Down On Me".

Gordon Waller Tribute

Gordon Waller was half of the 60's duo Peter and Gordon. They racked up a number of great hits and continued to perform together until Gordon's death in 2009.  Gordon was born on June 4, 1945... so in tribute to a big part of the British Invasion, a forgotten oldie from Peter and Gordon that features Gordon heavily on vocals... the top 20 hit from 1965 "True Love Ways"... a true forgotten oldie.

Pushin' Too Hard

I will never understand why this song doesn't get regular air-play. Considered one of the 500 songs that shaped rock and roll, the song "Pushin' Too Hard" by The Seeds is a garage band classic that was a top 40 hit in 1967, and is largely forgotten today!
