The Big Game

I don't remember a "Big Game" I've been less excited about. Aside from the fact that I dislike the Patriots immensely, I don't like the Seahawks much better.  And Katy Perry at halftime?  Were all the decent acts busy or what?

First Country Rock song?

"Mr. Spaceman" by the Byrds was the third single from the 1966 "5D" (Fifth Dimension) album.  As a single it barely cracked the top 40, but as a song it was arguably responsible for two music genres, space rock and country rock.  It has also been covered by a diverse group of artists from Jimmy Buffett to The Muppets to The Flying Burrito Brothers to Alvin and the Chipmunks.  The Byrds performed the song on many TV shows in the 60's also.  Today the song seems familiar... but mostly forgotten.

Hey Joe, where are you gonna go?

The California garage band The Leaves only had one hit, "Hey Joe", in 1966.  But if there was ever a band that deserved more, it was the Leaves.  They were monsters of the West Coast "scene" and even replaced the Byrds as house band at Ciro's in L.A.  Jim Pons, lead guitarist and founder, joined the Turtles after the Leaves broke up and later hooked up with Frank Zappa.  As it is, their version of Hey Joe was the first, and the song became a rock standard of the time.  Today, it's nearly forgotten.

Caroline No

Released as a Brian Wilson solo single in 1966, "Caroline No" was a modest success reaching the top 40.  Also included as a Beach Boys song on the Pet Sounds album, the song was voted by Billboard as #214 of the 500 greatest rock songs of all time.  Today it's simply another forgotten oldie.

When I Was Young

This song was a top 20 hit for Eric Burdon and the Animals in 1967. Burdon said it was based on his father's life. What a great song, but mostly forgotten today.

Today is the day...

I believe today marks the anniversary of the birth of the British Invasion!  On January 20, 1964 the Capitol album "Meet the Beatles" was released in the USA.  Others will argue that it was their first night on Ed Sullivan, but without this album.... well, who knows!!

Mojo Men

The song "Sit Down I Think I Love You" was a top 40 hit for the Mojo Men in 1967.  The song was a cover version of a song on the first Buffalo Springfield album.  Interestingly, Sly Stone was at one time in the band, and it was called Sly and the Mojo Men.  Although the Mojo Men only had the one hit, they released several good albums and have had several of their songs recorded by other artists, including Kanye West as recently as 2010.

Vanilla Fudge... yum!

Actually, I'm referring to the psychedelic band of the 60's.  Their cover version of the Supremes #1 smash hit "You Keep Me Hanging On" burst onto the radio in 1967 and roared to #6 on the Hot 100.  As a dyed in the wool rock and roller, I love the Vanilla Fudge version.... to me the songs' delivery matches the lyrics better.  Vanilla Fudge performed the song on Ed Sullivan on January 14, 1968 - exactly 47 years ago today!

I bought a new snow shovel Saturday, an expensive one. It's called the "Snow Plow", and I gotta tell you, this thing does the job!  It helps you get rid of anything that's packed down on your driveway or sidewalk and clears the snow like no other shovel I've ever had!  Try one, another great tool for your snow arsenal!

Happy Birthday Elvis...

Today would be Elvis Presley's 80th birthday. In honor, our forgotten oldie is an Elvis song. "Return to Sender" was a smash hit in 1962, going to #1 in England, Ireland and Canada, and #2 on the Hot 100 in America. It was #1 according to Cashbox however.  For some reason, it's one Elvis song I never hear anymore, and yet it's always been my favorite Elvis tune. On his brthday, Return to Sender by Elvis.

Pretty Flamingo

Today's forgotten oldie comes from Manfred Mann, the song "Pretty Flamingo".  The song was an international hit in 1966, even going to #1 in England.  Interestingly, Jack Bruce of Cream was with Manfred Mann when this song was recorded, providing a great trivia tidbit.
