True Love Ways

Peter and Gordon had a bunch of big hits in the 60's and represented the acoustic duo's of the British Invasion.  In 1965 they took the Buddy Holly song "True Love Ways" to #2 in Britain and #14 in the USA.  As much as I love Buddy Holly, the Peter & Gordon version is amazing and sadly forgotten.

A Christmas Wish...

Tomorrow is Christmas Eve.  Thinking back on the last year, I can come up with a lot of good things to reflect on... and a few bad things as well.  One thing I really became aware of this year is the number of accidents we see near the studio here on Highway 35.  As someone that drives a lot daily, and spends a lot of time every year on 16, 35 and 53, I've formed an opinion.... there are a LOT of really reckless drivers on those highways that think their commute is a Nascar race.  So, here's my Christmas wish for the racers... I sincerely hope you get caught speeding and driving recklessly, you are a threat to every good driver on the road and deserve to lose your license.  So the rest of us can get home safe.

Aaarrooooooooooooooo....

Today's forgotten oldie was a #2 smash in both the USA and Canada in 1966,  "Little Red Riding Hood" from the garage band Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs was based on the fairy tale and the kids loved it. It's rare to hear it on the radio, but it's been used in movies, TV shows and even Volvo commercials.  I think it's a great song that deserves airplay!!

1966, a big year for Keith

I don't mean me, I mean James Barry Keefer, known to the record industry as Keith.  First he had a huge hit with the song "98.6", and then later in 1966 he scored a top forty hit with "Ain't Gonna Lie".  But that was it for Keith, he goes down in history as a Two-Hit Wonder.  Still, Ain't Gonna Lie is a solid song, but forgotten today.

Something In The Air

In 1969 Pete Townsend of the Who put together a band to record songs sung by Pete's friend Speedy Keen.  Townsend even played bass for the band.  The band, named Thunderclap Newman, released a song Speedy wrote, "Something In The Air".  The song went to #1 in England and was a hit around the world, reaching the top 40 in the USA in May. It's a great 60's style song, probably most notable for the dozens of movies and TV commercials it was featured in. Tom Petty had a hit with the song in 1994, but the Thunderclap Newman version is best.  Maybe it's not truly forgotten, but it should be played more!

Lady Godiva

Nope, it's not a history lesson, it's today's forgotten oldie. Peter and Gordon took the song "Lady Godiva" all the way to #6 on the Hot 100 on December 10, 1966. A top ten hit, mostly forgotten today.

British Invasion 1964

One of my favorite British Invasion bands was The Searchers.  They had a wave of releases in 1964 and 1965, most of them valid hit records, and all of them excellent songs.  One of the best was "When You Walk In The Room" written by Jackie DeShannon.  It reached #35 on the Hot 100, but much higher in England and Canada.  Just a great song, mostly forgotten today!

Just like Rudy Vallee!

The New Vaudeville Band went to #1 in the USA on December 3rd, 1966 with the song "Winchester Cathedral". A copy of British Music Hall tunes, the singer sang through cupped hands in a Rudy Vallee voice, imitating the Vaudeville megaphone singers of the 1920's. Despite it;s novelty appeal, The song surged to number one twice, beating out the Supremes and the Beach Boys in the process.  A unique song, forgotten today.
