Top Ten hit, but forgotten.

Rare Earth was the first band signed by Motown that consisted of all-white members, that had solid hit records.  In 1970 they took a Temptations song and gave it the Rare Earth treatment, and the song climbed to #7 on the Hot 100.  "I Know I'm Losing You" is a classic, covered by many artists, notably Rod Stewart, and yet the Rare Earth version is nearly forgotten today.

Guess what these are....

Perhaps you know, perhaps you have no idea... but they're definitely symbols of a fun time in many of our lives.  Going to a drive-in movie!!  These are the speakers you hung on your window (in case you didn't know). By the way, my favorite drive-in played rock and roll tunes through the speakers before the movie... cool!

Rodent Radio...

In 1976 the Captain and Tennille recorded a song that had already been a minor hit for America in 1973. The song was "Muskrat Love", and strangely, their version clicked, climbing to #4 on the Hot 100.  I'm not sure why the song has disappeared over the years, a solid top ten hit that was number 30 in total sales that year... today's forgotten oldie.

From 1966...

Back in the day I used to play some albums so much I'd wear them out... that was the case for "Hums of the Lovin' Spoonful".  Songs like "Summer in the City", "Darlin' Companion", "Nashville Cats", and today's forgotten oldie... "Rain on the Roof".  Rain on the Roof peaked at #10 on the Hot 100 on 11/19/66.  It's just a sweet little ditty that was all Spoonful, and a nice break from the norm, just a cool song, forgotten today.

Remember this?

"Let's Spend The Night Together" by the Rolling Stones has a ton of crazy history.  Released in 1967 as the "A" side with "Ruby Tuesday" as the "B" side, radio stations decided to play the B side due to the controversial and suggestive lyrics of the A side.  So "Ruby" became a #1 hit on the Hot 100.  Ed Sullivan refused to let the Stones perform the song on his show, finally relenting if they sang "Let's Spend Some Time Together".  Of course that made fans love the Stones even more.  The title of a documentary movie of the Stones Greatest Hits live was also given the title "Let's Spend the Night Together". What a great song, largely forgotten today.

A Little Green Bag...

A record released in 1969, the song "Little Green Bag" was a top twenty hit in 1970.  A Dutch band named The George Baker Selection scored the one-hit wonder, which was almost completely forgotten until it appeared in the 1992 movie Reservoir Dogs.  The movie catapulted the song to international cult classic status and it was re-released in many countries.  Unfortunately, it's still pretty much forgotten today.  Listen here...

A listener request...

Today a forgotten oldie that was part of he new wave of music in the 60's aimed at raising social consciousness... a new role for rock music but one that became very popular.  The song was a hit around the world, reaching as high as #2 on the charts in Canada.  With Eric Burdon's growly vocals, and Alan Price's dark organ line the song "It's My Life" is all Animals, and yet is mostly forgotten today.

Remember this?

"If I Were A Carpenter" was written and first recorded by Tim Hardin.  The song was a monster hit for Bobby Darin in 1966, a smash on the soul charts for the Four Tops in 1968, and a #2 hit for Johnny Cash and June Carter on the country chart in 1970.  Honestly there aren't very many songs that are big hits three time in three different music genres!  The version I like best is Bobby Darin's... you'll remember the song when you hear it.  A classic, but mostly forgotten today.
