Today's Forgotten Oldie...

The Partridge Family was another pre-fab TV band that was created specifically for a TV show and yet squeezed out a few legitimate hits on the radio.  Although the music was largely a result of studio musicians, the majority of the vocals were provided by show stars David Cassidy and Shirley Jones.  "I'll Meet You Halfway" was a top ten smash in 1971, reaching #9 on the Hot 100.  Labeled bubble-gum, their music was catchy and deserves more respect than it received.  Listen to one of their albums and I think you'll be surprised at how good it is.

Today's Forgotten Oldie...

Smith was an American rock band that started out in California in 1969.  Discovered in a small club by Del Shannon, they took the Burt Bacharach song "Baby It's You" to #5 on the Hot 100 in July of 1969.  The record topped a million in sales, stayed on the charts for four months and received a gold record.  To me, this is the best version of the song and though I like the Beatles and Shirelles versions, the Smith record is perfect.  It makes no sense that it's been forgotten...

Today's Forgotten Oldie...

"Winchester Cathedral" went all the way to #1 in the USA in December of 1966.  Recorded and released by the New Vaudeville band, it was meant to sound like the music from the British Music Hall era.  A novelty song actually recorded by session musicians, it's the kind of song that intrigues me.  Who bought it?  I never saw the album or 45 in any of my friend's collections, most of my peers hated the song.  To this day, I've seen very few copies in collections. My theory is that occasionally there are songs that are bought by a much older crowd... but it's just a theory.

Today's Forgotten Oldie...

"When I Was Young" by Eric Burdon and the Animals came out in early 1967 and spent the year traveling around the world, becoming a hit in many countries.  It reached #15 in the U.S., #10 in Canada and #2 in Australia.  At the time of this record, the band had moved from England to California.  Written by all five band members, the song's counter-cultural theme made it a favorite number for punk and metal bands to cover.  It's a solid song and surprisingly meaningful today...

Amazing discovery!

Archaeologists recently unearthed a cave home estimated to be thousands of years old.  Amazingly, they discovered an ancient photo hanging over the crude fireplace, proving that Fred Flintstone actually lived!  (I'm in a strange mood today, can ya tell?)

Today's Forgotten Oldie...

"Please Please Me" was the first Beatle single released in the U.S.A.  Hitting number one in England meant little in January of 1963 though, and the song went pretty much un-noticed by the American youth and American DJ's.  However, when the song was re-released in March of 1964, a month after the historic appearance of the Beatles on Ed Sullivan and in the tumultuous early days of the British Invasion, all the rules had changed.  The song peaked at #3 on the Hot 100 on March 13, 1964 exactly 50 years ago today. 50 years later, we rarely hear the song on the radio... largely forgotten.

Today's Forgotten Oldie...

American singer Bob Lind hit #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 with the song "Elusive Butterfly" on March 12, 1966, exactly 48 years ago today.  Although a one-hit wonder, Bob is an amazing guy with successful books, plays and screenplays, plus songs he's written have been recorded by dozens of artists around the world.  Elusive Butterfly is a cool song, although dated it is a great example of 60's folk-rock.

Today's Forgotten Oldie...

"Evil Woman (Don't Play Your Games With Me)" was a top twenty hit for the Minneapolis based rock band Crow in 1969.  The song was covered by Black Sabbath in 1970 and was actually Sabbath's first single release.  Personally I much prefer the Crow version.  Crow broke up and reformed several times over the years and still occasionally gets together to perform today.

Today's Forgotten Oldie...

One of the things I loved about the British Invasion was how radio announcers started promoting "B" sides of 45 records.  Sometimes it was hard to know which side of a record was the hit.  Such was the case with today's forgotten oldie.... "No Milk Today" was the "B" side of 1967's "There's A Kind of Hush" by Herman's Hermits.  The record cracked the top ten, but which side was the real hit?  Who cares, they were both great!
